Wheaton Edges Wellesley 49-45

WORCESTER, MASS. – Vanessa Savas (Belmont, Mass.) scored 12 points and Kerry Deshefy (Clinton, Conn.) added 11 to lead Wheaton to its third straight victory with a 49-45 win over Wellesley in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference women's basketball match-up, Tuesday at Wheaton. With the win Wheaton improves to 7-9 overall and 3-2 in the NEWMAC while Wellesley drops to 7-8 overall and 2-3 in the conference.

Wellesley held a slim 25-23 lead at the half but was hampered by a 9-for-21 performance from the free-throw line, while Wheaton scored 17 of its 49 points from the charity stripe with a 17-for-23 mark, including a 13-for-15 second half.

Wellesley's Christine Carbonello (Londonderry, N.H.) scored a game-high 16 points for the Blue on 6-for-11 shooting while grabbing eight rebounds and four steals. Sophomore Kristin Doeberl (West Redding, Conn.) was the only other Wellesley player in double-figures with 10 points while senior Kelly Grover (Westbrook, Maine) chipped in with seven points and a game-high 13 rebounds.

The loss marks the seventh this season that Wellesley has fell by a margin of five points or less.
Wellesley returns to action, Saturday, February 8 against W.P.I. at home. Tip-off is at 2 p.m.
