Wellesley Downs W.P.I. 60-40

WORCESTER, MASS. – Wellesley seniors Christine Carbonello (Londonderry, N.H.) and Kelly Grover (Westbrook, Maine) combined for 35 of Wellesley’s 60 points and each recorded double-doubles to lead Wellesley to a 60-40 New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference win against W.P.I., Saturday at Wellesley.  With the win Wellesley improves to 8-8 overall and 3-3 in the NEWMAC while W.P.I. falls to 4-14 and 0-5.
 
Grover had game-highs of 18 points and 14 rebounds while Carbonello finished with 17 points, a season-high 13 rebounds, two assists and two steals. First-year guard Catherine Romasco had a career-high eight assists for the Blue, while grabbing four rebounds.
 
W.P.I. was led by 14 points from junior guard Alison Wing (Brewer, Maine).  Wing was 5-for-9 from the floor and 3-for-6 from beyond the arc.
 
Both teams traded baskets in the opening five minutes of the first half before Wellesley used and 11-0 run to take a 17-7 lead and control of the game with nine minutes to play. Sophomore Bridget Harris (Newbury Park, Calif.) came off the bench and scored four of her 11 points in the run while Grover, Carbonello and Kristin Doeberl (West Redding, Conn.) each chipped in with two points a piece. 
 
Wellesley took its largest lead of the half at 26-10 on the heels of a 9-0 run with four minutes remaining as Carbonello scored seven unanswered points for the Blue on three lay-ups, including two offensive rebounds and put-backs, and a free throw, leading Wellesley to a 30-15 halftime advantage.
 
Wellesley, which connected on 13-of-32 shots in the first half, continued its hot-shooting in the second half connecting on 14-of-27 attempts (51.8 %) while W.P.I. struggled from the floor shooting just 29.4 percent from the field (15-for-51). 
 
Wellesley returns to action Tuesday, February 11, on the road against NEWMAC opponent Clark University.  Game time is 5:30 p.m.
