WELLESLEY UPENDS MOUNT HOLYOKE 59-55

SOUTH HADLEY, MASS. – Behind by three points at 55-52 Wellesley outscored Mount Holyoke College 7-0 over the final three minutes of action to upend the Lyons 59-55 in a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference basketball match-up Tuesday in South Hadley. With the win Wellesley snaps a three-game skid and improves to 7-9 overall and 3-5 in the NEWMAC. Mount Holyoke falls to 15-4 overall and 6-3 in league play.

Kristin Doeberl (West Redding, Conn.) scored four of her game-high 16 points in the final push to pace the Blue while Erin Johnson (Westhampton Beach, N.Y.) added three points, including a jumper with seven seconds remaining to seal the win.  Johnson ended the game with 10 points and three assists.

In a game with 12 lead changes and five ties, Mount Holyoke entered the halftime break holding onto the lead as Christine Godin (Lunenburg, Mass.) connected on a buzzer-beating jump-shot for a 28-26 advantage. The Lyons would lead by as many as eight points early in the second half before Wellesley clawed its way back to take its first lead of the second half at 41-39 as sophomore Hadley Diest (Mendota Heights, Minn.) connected on a three-pointer for her only points of the night with 12:43 remaining. Mount Holyoke quickly countered, however, reclaiming the lead at 45-41 with just over 10 minutes remaining as Godin, Sara Belding (Sebastopol, Calif.) and Jonee Billy (New York, N.Y.) each scored two points a piece. Godin would finish the game with 10 points and two assists while Billy led Mount Holyoke with 14 points and seven rebounds.

Both teams would trade baskets the rest of the way with Mount Holyoke holding on to a slim advantage as Wellesley pulled to within one point five times over the next eight minutes. Angela Astuccio (Foxboro, Mass.), who ended the game with 10 points, would score Mount Holyoke’s final basket of the game with 2:35 remaining for a 55-52 Lyon lead before Wellesley would close the game with seven unanswered points for the win.
