WELLESLEY WINS THIRD STRAIGHT, DOWNS MIT 77-42

WELLESLEY, MASS. –Behind 50 percent shooting from the field, connecting on 29-of-57 shots, Wellesley College earned its third straight win defeating MIT 77-42 in a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference Women’s Basketball match-up Tuesday at Wellesley. With the win, Wellesley improves to .500 on the season and stands at 9-9 overall and 5-5 in the NEWMAC, while MIT drops to 2-16 and 0-10.
 
Kristin Doeberl (West Redding, Conn.) and Erin Johnson (Westhampton Beach, N.Y.) paced the Blue with 11 and 10 points respectively as 10 Wellesley players figured in the scoring column. Doeberl was 5-of-6 from the floor while Johnson added a game-high seven assists to go along with her 10 points. Hadley Diest (Ostego, Mich.) and Lindsay Worrell (Wareham, Mass.) chipped in with nine points a piece as Worrell drained three out of four three-point field goals for a career-best scoring mark. Laura Weslander (Mendota Heights, Minn.), Bridget Harris (Newbury Park, Calif) and Alex Allukian (Boston, Mass.) each added eight points for the Blue.
 
Rayna Zacks (Winnetka, Ill.) led MIT recording a double-double on 14 points and 12 rebounds while Maria Hidalgo (Auburn, Wash.) added nine points.
 
Both squads started the game trading baskets through the first five minutes of the game. With a slim three-point lead at 9-6, Wellesley broke open the game outscoring MIT 18-6 over the next ten minutes of action to take a commanding 16-point lead at 28-12 with just over four minutes remaining in the first half. Wellesley would enter the halftime break with a 19-point 38-19 cushion.
 
The second half was much of the same as Wellesley continued to hold the hot hand connecting on 5-of-8 attempts from beyond the arc. Wellesley ended the game with a 53.8 percent three-point field goal percentage on 7-of-13 shooting from long range, while MIT was hampered by 27 percent from the floor making 17-of-23 shots.
