Babson Fends Off Wellesley 67-50
BABSON PARK, Mass. – Babson College built
a 24-point halftime lead and then withstood a late Wellesley College
comeback on its way to a 67-50 victory in New England Women's and
Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's basketball action on
Saturday afternoon. It was the first league win of the year for
the Beavers, who improved to 7-5 overall and 1-1 in the NEWMAC,
while the Blue dropped their third straight to fall to 4-6 overall
and 0-2 in the conference.
Babson overpowered Wellesley in the first half, shooting 46.9 percent
from the field on its way to a commanding 41-17 lead at the break.
Junior forward Erin Conroy (Old Greenwich, Conn.) led all players
with 12 points and seven rebounds in the opening stanza, while fellow
junior Sheila Nanjego (Malden, Mass.) added nine points and six
boards.
The Beavers continued to maintain a large lead early in the second
half, as Nanjego knocked down a jumper with 13 minutes remaining
to give Babson a 49-29 advantage. Wellesley then responded with
a quick 8-0 run that was highlighted by back-to-back jumpers by
first-year Laura Jasinski (Amherst, Mass.), pulling the Blue to
within 12 at 49-37 with just under 11 minutes left to play. However,
after the two teams traded several empty possessions, Conroy scored
off a beautiful drive and dish from senior captain Katie McMackin
(Needham, Mass.) with nine minutes remaining, sparking an 8-0 Babson
spurt that put the game away.
Conroy was outstanding in the victory for Babson, scoring a career-high
20 points on 9-of-18 shooting to go along with 15 rebounds. It was
the junior forward's fourth double-double of the season. Nanjego
added her sixth double-double of the year with 15 points and 11
boards, while first-year point guard Colleen Burke (Pittsfield,
Mass.) chipped in with 10 points and three assists.
Wellesley was led by sophomore Laura Weslander (Mendota Heights,
Minn.), who scored a career-high 15 points while knocking down three-of-eight
from long range, and junior Erin Johnson (Westhapmton Beach, N.Y.),
who added seven points and five rebounds. The Blue were outrebounded,
48-31, including 22 off the Babson offensive glass that led to 18
second-chance points for the Beavers.
Today’s game was originally scheduled to be played at Wellesley.
As a result of the change in schedule Wellesley will now host Babson
on February 7th.
