WELLESLEY DOWNS MIT 72-37

Cambridge, Mass. – Wellesley shot 50 percent from the field, connecting on 14-of-28 field goals in the opening half, to build a 17-point  39-22 lead at intermission and never looked back en route to a 72-37 win over MIT in a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference women’s basketball match-up Saturday at MIT.

Wellesley’s Laura Weslander (Mendota Heights, Washington) scored a career-best 15 points, including three three-point field goals on 3-for-4 shooting from beyond the arc, to lead a solid team scoring effort as five players scored at least eight points for the Blue.  With the win Wellesley evens out at 6-6 overall and 2-2 in league action while MIT drops to 1-8 and 0-3.

First-year Laura Jasinski (Amherst, Mass) and sophomore Hadley Diest (Otsego, Mich.) scored 11 and nine points respectively while Kristin Doeberl (Redding, Conn.) and Sefi Adasi (Rockville, Md.) chipped in with eight points a piece. Jasinski, Adasi and Doeberl shared team rebounding honors collecting eight rebounds each as Wellesley out-rebounded MIT 50-31.

Rayna Zacks paced the Engineers with 14 points and a game-high nine rebounds and Maria Hidalgo chipped in with nine points and five rebounds, but it wasn’t enough as MIT gave up 22 offensive rebounds and committed 26 turnovers.

Wellesley returns to action January 20 at 7 p.m. against NEWMAC rival Smith. The game will be played at Regis College.
