SMITH FIGHTS OFF WELLESLEY 57-51
Wellesley, Mass. – Smith College withstood
a furious come-back bid en route to a 57-51 decision over Wellesley
College in a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic
Conference match-up Tuesday at Wellesley. With the win Smith improves
to 6-7 overall and 3-2 in the NEWMAC while Wellesley falls to 6-7
overall and 2-3 in league action.
With the game tied at 50 points a piece with just over one minute
remaining in regulation, Smith’s Dasen Woitkowski (Pittsfield,
Mass.) scored four of her game-high 20 points and Shelley Harrison
(Reston, Va.) came up with two key blocked shots and an offensive
rebound and a put-back to fend off a surging Wellesley College squad.
Harrison ended the game with a double-double on 11 points, 10 rebounds,
two blocked shots and two steals.
Trailing by as much as 12 points with 8:47 remaining, Wellesley
outscored Smith 15-2 over the seven minutes to tie the game at 50
points a piece with 1:27 on the clock. Wellesley’s Bridget
Harris (Newbury Park, Calif.) came off the bench and scored eight
of her nine points in the run and added two steals.
Kristin Doeberl (Redding, Conn.) paced the Blue with 12 points while
Laura Weslander ( Medota Heights, Minn.) and Alex Allukian (Boston,
Mass.) chipped in with eight points a piece. Smith’s Kerry
Jo Nagle (Florence, Mass.) also scored in double-digits netting
11 points on 5-for-11 shooting from the field.
