WELLESLEY OPENS SEASON WITH 57-52 WIN OVER ALBERTUS MAGNUS

Williamstown, Mass. – Trailing by nine points late in the second half, Wellesley College put together an 18-4 run over the final 10 minutes of the game to earn a season-opening 57-52 win against Albertus Magnus (0-1) in the first game of the Williams College Invitational. Wellesley (1-0) will play the winner of the Williams/Bay Path game, Sunday in the invitational championship game at 3 p.m.
 
Behind 48-39 with just under nine minutes to play, Wellesley ran off 12 unanswered points as first-year Alex Allukian (Boston, Mass./Boston Latin) scored all seven of her points to spark the run, including a put-back on an offensive rebound to give Wellesley its first lead of the second half with five minutes remaining at 49-48. Erin Johnson (Westhampton, N.Y.) tallied six points in the decisive run, including a jumper with just five seconds remaining to seal the 57-52 win.
 
Both teams entered the second half with the score knotted at 25 points apiece but Albertus Magnus opened up the half with an 11-2 run behind five points from Tara Cruz (West Haven, Conn.) to take a 36-27 lead. Wellesley cut the lead to three at 40-37 as sophomore Catie Romasco (Worcester, Mass.) connected on two jumpers and passed off one of her team-high five assists, but Albertus Magnus answered quickly with a 6-2 mini-run to reclaim its nine-point advantage with 9:16 remaining.    
 
Johnson had a team-high 13 points and eight rebounds to pace Wellesley while Kristin Doeberl (West Redding, Conn.) chipped in with eight points and four rebounds. First-year Laura Jasinksi (Amherst, Mass.) hauled in a game-high 11 rebounds.
 
Albertus Magnus was led by a game-high 18 points from Natalia Perlaza (Wallingford, Conn.) and eight points and five assists from Cruz.  Perlaza was 9-of-19 from the floor to lead all scorers, chipping in with six rebounds and four steals.
