BRANDEIS HOLDS OFF WELLESLEY 64-55

Wellesley, Mass. – Led by double-digit scoring efforts from four players, Brandeis held off a surging Wellesley squad for a 64-55 win giving Head Coach Carol Simon her 200th career victory in a non-conference women’s basketball match-up, Saturday at Wellesley. With the win Brandeis improves to 3-0 while Wellesley falls to 1-2 on the season.

Caitlin Malcolm (Windsor Locks, Conn.) led all scorers posting a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Judges past Wellesley. Christine Clancy (Yarmouth, Maine) and Danielle Fitzpatrick (Stratham, N.H.) each reached double-figures netting 14 and 13 points respectively while Jayne Wise (Chatham, N.J.) chipped in with 10 points. Malcolm did most of her damage in the first half coming off the bench for 15 points on 7-for-9 shooting to lead Brandeis to a commanding 32-21 halftime advantage.

Erin Johnson (Westhampton, N.Y.) scored 14 points to lead Wellesley, while first-year Laura Jasinski (Amherst, Mass.) recorded her first career double-double on 10 points and a game-high 16 rebounds.

Brandeis led by as many as 19 points late in the second half at 55-36 before Wellesley cut into the lead to trail by nine points with seven minutes remaining.   Wellesley used a trio of three-point field goals from three different players to find itself back into the game.  Sophomore Catie Romasco (Worcester, Mass.) started the 13-3 run hitting the first of back-to-back treys for Wellesley as Johnson followed Romasco with her second three-pointer of the half, cutting the lead to 12 at 56-44.  Jasinski then collected an offensive rebound and a lay-up before Laura Weslander (Mendota Heights, Minn.) netted her only three-point field goal of the night to bring the deficit to nine at 58-49 with 6:51 on the clock.

Brandeis held on however as Clancy, Fitzpatrick and Wise each scored short-jumpers to keep Wellesley at bay. Wise ended the game with six points and six assists.

Wellesley returns to action on the road December 3 at Regis College for a 7 p.m. game.
