ST. JOSEPH’S RALLIES PAST WELLESLEY 60-57
Poughkeepsie, N.Y. – St. Joseph’s
College (Conn.) overcame a 13-point second half deficit to defeat
Wellesley 60-57 in the first round of the 2003 Seven Sisters Basketball
Championship hosted by Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., Saturday.
Wellesley (2-3) will face Vassar Saturday at 12 p.m. in the second
round of the tournament. Vassar fell to Swarthmore 41-36 earlier
in the day.
St. Joseph’s took advantage of Wellesley’s 23 percent
second half shooting percentage and the hot-shooting of Maureen
Christ (Westherfield, Conn.) to rally past Wellesley. Christ spearheaded
the Blue Jays come-from-behind win, knocking down four of her game-high
five three-point field goals. Christ, who led St. Joseph’s
with 15 points, was 4-for-5 from beyond the arc in the second stanza
and 5-for-10 for the game. Edna Caamano (East Hartford, Conn.)
chipped in with 12 points and a team-high eight rebounds for the
Blue Jays who will play Swarthmore, Saturday at 4 p.m.
Wellesley had three players score in double digits led by a 16-point,
seven-rebound effort from junior guard Erin Johnson (Westhampton,
N.Y.). Kristin Doeberl (Redding, Conn.) added 10 points and
six rebounds while first-year Alex Allukian (Boston, Mass.) poured
in 10 points and grabbed six boards in just 16 minutes of action.
