WELLESLEY SLIPS PAST WPI 42-40

Wellesley, Mass. – Alex Allukian (Boston, Mass./Boston Latin) scored nine points, including three of Wellesley’s final five points of the game, as the Blue held off WPI 42-40 in a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference women’s basketball tilt, Saturday at Wellesley.

Allukian scored all nine of her team-high points in the second half as Wellesley improves to 11-10 overall and 7-6 in conference action while WPI falls to 15-10 and 8-5. Junior Erin Johnson (Westhampton Beach, N.Y.) added eight points and a team-high four assists for the Blue while Kristin Doeberl (West Redding, Conn.) chipped in with six points and a game-high nine rebounds.

WPI’s Lee Helberg (South Yarmouth, Mass.) led two Engineers players in double-figures scoring a game-high 14 points while Allison Wing (Brewer, Maine) netted 11 points to go along with five rebounds, five assists and four steals.

Trailing by four points with under a minute to play, WPI’s Wing brought the Engineers to within two points at 42-40 on a driving lay-up with 35 seconds remaining. After a missed lay-up from Johnson, WPI regained possession and had two chances to knot the game up in the final twelve seconds, including a team-offensive rebound, but both shots found nothing but iron as time expired.

Both teams struggled to find their range early on in the game as Wellesley took a slim 19-17 halftime advantage after low scoring first half. Wellesley shot 31.8 percent from the field in the first half connecting on 7-of-22 shots while WPI finished 8-of-29 shots in the opening stanza for a 27.6 field goal percentage. For the game Wellesley connected on 17-of-46 shots, shooting 37 percent from the field while WPI was 17-for-58 shooting 29.3 percent.
