CLARK CLIPS WELLESLEY 64-43 TO ADVANCE TO THE NEWMAC CHAMPIONSHIP SEMIFINALS

Worcester, Mass. – Four Clark players scored in double figures as the second seed Cougars downed seventh-seed Wellesley College 64-43 in quarterfinal action of the 2004 New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference women’s basketball tournament. Clark (19-6) advances to the semifinal of the NEWMAC Championship and will play third-seed Mount Holyoke Friday, February 27 at 5:30 p.m. at Springfield College.   Mount Holyoke defeated Smith in its quarterfinal match-up 60-41.

Echo Freeman (Maynard, Mass.) led the Cougars with 16 points on 6-for-7 shooting while Ashley Auclair (Williamsburg, Mass.), Andrea Comen (Holden, Mass.) and Rachael Turkington (Holland, Mass.) netted 13, 12 and 10 points respectively.

Erin Johnson (Westhampton Beach, N.Y.) paced Wellesley (11-11) with a game-high 20 points. Kristin Doeberl (West Redding, Conn.) chipped in with nine points, five rebounds, two assists and three steals for the Blue which was hampered by a 33.3 field goal percentage, connecting on just 14-for-42 shots for the game.

Clark took control of the game midway through the second half, outscoring Wellesley 21-5 during a key eight minute stretch. Holding on to a five-point lead at 37-32 with 12:11 remaining, the Cougars rattled off 11 unanswered points to take a commanding 48-32 lead with just under eight minutes to play as Wellesley went ice-cold missing five straight shots.  Clark’s Comen scored four of her 13 points in the run, while Turkington nailed one of her two three-pointers.

Wellesley snapped its scoring drought scoring its first field goal in over four minutes on a jumper from sophomore Hadley Diest (Mendota Heights, Minn.) to cut the lead to 13 at 48-35 with seven minutes to play, but it was as close as they would get the rest of the way as Clark would outscore the Blue 10-2 over the next three minutes to take its largest lead of the game at 21 points at 58-37 with 3:58 to play.
