Wellesley, Mass. - Wellesley College (1-0) and Ithaca College (1-0) advanced to the Championship Game of the 2000 Wellesley College Invitational with first round victories today, at the Towne Fieldhouse at Wellesley College. Host Wellesley defeated St. Mary's College (0-1) by a score of 85-45, while the Bombers (1-0) advanced to the championship game over Johnson & Wales University (0-1) at the tip-off tourney with a 73-52 decision.
Host Wellesley College cruised to victory with five Wellesley players scoring in double digits. Sophomore guard Kate Lyren led the Blue's attack with 17 points and 7 assists. Lyren shot 6 for 13 and hit 4 of 7 from the 3-point line. Senior co-captains and twin sisters Amy and Meg Barao (Norwell, MA) were a double-threat with Amy Barao compiling 15 points, 6 assists and 5 steals and Meg Barao adding 10 points, 7 assists, 4 steals and a game-high 21 rebounds. Also scoring in double figures for the Blue were sophomore Kelly Grover with 14 and senior Shani Delaney with 11. St. Mary's was led by sophomore Kristen Matha with 11 points. Sophomore Shaun Russell and junior co-captain Anne Blair added 10 points apiece for the Belles.
In the second game, Ithaca College defeated Johnson & Wales 73-52. The Bombers were led by sophomore co-captain Kerri Brown with 16 points, 5 assists and 5 steals. Senior co-captain Kelly Brady added 12 points and a game-high 9 rebounds. First-year Jennie Swatling and junior Donna Fisher added 11 points, respectively. Linda Yebra Led Johnson & Wales with 16 points and 5 rebounds. Senior Jinnelle Brown also scored in double-digits, adding 14 points for the Wildcats.
