Wellesley, Mass. - Wellesley College (2-0) captured the 2000 Wellesley College Basketball Invitational Title defeating Ithaca College (1-1) by a score of 81-59 today, at the Towne Fieldhouse at Wellesley College. In the Consolation game, Saint Mary's (IN) took third place in the tournament with a 66-38 victory over Johnson & Wales.
Wellesley took the lead early and went on to defeat Ithaca by a score of 81-59. Wellesley was led in the championship game by Tournament MVP (senior co-captain) Meg Barao with 15 points (6 for 7), 11 rebounds and 8 assists. Sophomore Kate Lyren, also named to the All-Tournament Team, scored a game-high 21 points (7 for 14) for Wellesley. The Ithaca Bombers were led by freshman All-Tournament selection Jennise Swatling, with 15 points (6 for 9), 5 rebounds, and 2 assists. Senior co-captain Kelly Brady also scored 13 points fo the Bombers.
In the Consolation game, the Belles of Saint Mary's (1-1) defeated the Wildcats of Johnson & Wales (0-2) by a score of 66-38. Saint Mary's was led by Junior Co-Captain Anne Blair (14 points/4 rebounds) and Kristen Matha (10 points/18 rebounds). The Wildcats were led by freshman Soccorro Cronan with 10 points and 7 boards.
