Ward Leads Babson Over Wellesley, 82-60

BOX SCORE

WELLESLEY, Mass. -- Babson senior forward Suzy Ward scored 16 points to guide the Bears to an 82-60 win over cross-town rival Wellesley College. Ward also became the 11th player in Babson history to score 1000 points, sinking a 12-foot jumper to reach the mark with 16:04 remaining in the second half. The win evens Babson's record at 11-11, while the Blue drop to 4-17.

The game began evenly, with both teams trading buckets through the first ten minutes, as Babson inched out to a 17-13 lead. The Bears then used their aggressive man-to-man defense and a fast transition offense to close out the half with a 24-3 run, taking a 41-16 lead into the break. First-year Sam Bartman and junior Linsey Poulson led Babson during the run, tallying 11 and 10 points, respectively. The Bears shot 50% (14 of 28) from the field for the half, while holding Wellesley to 21% (6-29).

Wellesley opened the second half with a brief 7-3 spurt, but Babson bounced back to stretch its lead to 55-25, with 14:09 left. Ward, who scored only two in the first half, erupted for 14 second-half points to lead the charge. Wellesley fought back late in the half behind sophomore Jessica Duff, cutting the lead to 18 points with 2:45 remaining. But Babson held the Blue scoreless for the remainder of the game to take home an 82-60 victory.

The Bear offense included four players in double figures, with Bartman (17 points), Ward (16), Becky Pelletier (13), and Poulson (10). Wellesley's Duff led all scorers with 20 points. Courtney Richter chipped in 11 for the Blue, while Courtney Pelley and Katie Martore added nine and seven, respectively. Martore also tallied six steals.

The Blue return to action on Wednesday, February 14, when they travel to MIT. Babson will travel to Emmanuel College on Monday evening for a non-conference game.
