Clark Grabs 79-55 Victory Over Wellesley
WORCESTER, MASS. 1/20/07 – Sarah Roderigue (Oakland, Maine) scored a career-high 32 points to lead the Clark University women’s basketball team past Wellesley College 79-55 in a New England Women’s and Men’s
Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game on Saturday at the Kneller Athletic Center. With the win, Clark moves to 6-10 (2-2 NEWMAC), while Wellesley falls to 3-12 overall and 0-6 in the NEWMAC.
Roderigue, who was 5-6 from three-point range, also added seven rebounds and eight assists. Ashley Auclair (Williamsburg, Mass.) chipped in 12 points and five rebounds. Courtney Richter (Sinking Spring, Penn.) led the charge for the Blue with 17 points. Jessica Duff (Milton, Abingdon, UK) had a game-high 10 boards
for Wellesley.
Clark’s Roderigue stripped the ball and dished it to Auclair for the bucket to cap a 13-2 run to open the game. Wellesley took advantage of offensive rebounds to pull within five (9-14) on a jumper by Julia Thomas
(Concord, Calif.). Clark again found a double-digit lead (28-18) following a basket by Jess Lamothe (Westboro, Mass.), but Richter scored five points in 30 seconds to cut the lead in half (23-28). Roderigue extended the lead for the Cougars, however, as she scored three unanswered baskets, including a break-away lay-up off a steal, to give Clark its largest lead in the half, 38-25. The Cougars would end the half up 38-27.
Roderigue remained hot in the second half, opening the period 4-5 from the floor. Back- to-back threes by Roderigue and Sara Hagstrom (Yarmouth, Maine) gave the Cougars a 49-35 lead, and they never looked back. Clark went on a 25-7 run to increase its advantage and secure the victory. The Cougars shot 53.8% from behind the arc while forcing 30 turnovers. Wellesley held a 43-38 advantage in boards.
Wellesley next hosts the Massachusetts Institute of Technology on Wednesday (7 p.m.), while Clark next travels to the United States Coast Guard Academy that same day (7 p.m.).
