Wellesley Earns Second-Straight Win in 70-61 Victory over Haverford

HAVERFORD, PA – Wellesley shot 50% from the field for the game en route to a 70-61 win over Seven Sisters Basketball Tournament host Haverford College Sunday afternoon in the tournament's fifth-place game. The Blue improve to 2-5 overall on the season with the win, while the Fords fall to 1-4.
The Blue took an early 11-7 lead six minutes into the half, with four points scored early by sophomore forward Jessica Duff. Wellesley shot four-for-five from the floor during the first six minutes. Although Wellesley's defense held the Fords to 17.6% (3-17) shooting over the first eight and a half minutes, the Fords were able to stay in the game by forcing nine Blue turnovers in that span, and tied the game at 11 a piece after senior guard Abby Scattergood sank a three-point basket. After the Fords tied the game, the Blue went on a 6-0 run over the next 2:46 to take a 17-11 advantage. Haverford was able to work its way back and took its first lead since the 16:39 mark at 20-19 with 4:40 left in the first half after sophomore guard Caroline Feldman drained a three-pointer. Wellesley re-took the lead, and had a 33-30 edge on Haverford at the halftime break.
The Blue extended their lead to nine points with 13:45 left in the game after a three-pointer by sophomore Courtney Richter, but the Fords rallied back to within five points at 54-49 after sophomore guard Lindsay Festa sank a three-pointer with 7: 30 to go in the game. After a couple of possessions, Haverford sophomore guard Kathleen Ables cut the Fords deficit to one point, 55-54, after hitting a three from the top of the circle. The Blue extended their lead back up to five points with 3:35 remaining, and held on the rest of the way for the 70-61 victory.
Wellesley was led by Duff's game-high 19 points and junior Courtney Pelley's 16 points. Sophomore Courtney Richter contributed 15 points, and sophomore Julia Thomas had ten points in the victory for the Blue.
Haverford was led by sophomore forward Brittany Lattisaw's team-high 18 points and nine rebounds. Scattergood and Ables had 15 and 11 points, respectively, in the loss.
Wellesley went 2-1 in the tournament, defeating Bryn Mawr on Saturday, 55-54, and losing to Vassar, 55-38, in opening round action Friday evening. Haverford's lone win was a 54-48 win against St. Joseph (CT) on Saturday.
