UMASS DARTMOUTH COMES FROM BEHIND TO DOWN WELLESLEY, 69-68

NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-  UMass Dartmouth overcame a 17-point second half deficit, scoring the winning points on a lay-up from first-year guard Amanda Poniatowski (Shelton, Conn.) with 2.1 seconds remaining to defeat Wellesley, 69-68, at the Tripp Athletic Center.

UMass Dartmouth had taken a 67-66 lead on senior guard Merideth Morgan’s (Amherst, Mass) three-pointer with 37 seconds remaining.

Julia Thomas’ lay-up with 22 seconds remaining gave the lead back to the Blue, and the Corsairs fired the ball across the mid-court line and called their final time out with 21 seconds to play. Poniatowski’s trey missed, the ball was batted around and sophomore guard Vicki Andruszkiewicz (Danvers, Mass.) grabbed the rebound with 11 seconds to play. The in-bounds pass came to junior forward Lisa Satkevich (Quincy, Mass.), who drove and missed a lay-up, but Poniatowski grabbed the rebound and scored.

Wellesley made 13 of 14 shots from the free throw line in the first half, and built a 37-23 halftime lead. The Blue led, 50-33, after Sarah Corrigan’s (Cleveland, Ohio) three-pointer with 11:59 left in the game.

UMass Dartmouth used a 19-4 run during the next 5:20 to get back in contention. Poniatowski began the run with a pair of free throws and also hit two more free throws and a jumper, junior Ashley Chard (Burlington, Conn.) connected from three-point range, and Andruszkiewicz contributed a jumper and a three-point shot.

Andruszkiewicz led the Corsairs with 18 points, while Poniatowski and Chard had 16 points each. Jessica Duff (Milton Abingdon, UK) of the Blue led all scorers with 20 points and Thomas added 15.  Katie Martore (Great Falls, Va.) and Courtney Pelley (Leicester, Mass.)  each had 10. Chard had 12 rebounds for UMass Dartmouth, while Duff had 14 for Wellesley. Each had a double double.  The teams broke even on the boards, each team grabbing 43 rebounds. The Corsairs made all 13 of their free throws in the second half after making just four of 11 before halftime, while Wellesley was six of 14 from the line in the second half.

UMass Dartmouth improved to 5-17 with the victory, while Wellesley dropped to 4-16 with the defeat. The Corsairs will return to action when they host Eastern Connecticut State in the first game of a Little East Conference game Saturday afternoon, while the Blue will host Babson Saturday afternoon.
