Wellesley Basketball Drops 64-52 Loss to Rhode Island College

WELLESLEY, Mass. – Rhode Island College picked up a 64-52 non-conference win over host Wellesley College on Tuesday evening in Towne Field House. The Anchorwomen improve to 3-1, while the Blue stand at 0-4 on the season.

In a first-half that saw the lead change hands six times, RIC went on a 12-4 run in the closing three and half minutes of the stanza to grab a 35-25 advantage at the break. Cassi Malec (Johnston, R.I.) keyed the Anchorwomen’s scoring in the half’s final stretch, netting two from three point range. Malec sunk two additional three-pointers earlier in frame to help RIC chip away at Wellesley’s largest lead of the night, an 8-3 edge at 3:05 into the contest.

Malec opened up the second stanza by scoring her fifth three-point basket of the night and helped the Anchorwomen kick off a 7-2 run, giving RIC a 42-27 lead at 2:53 into the second half. The Anchorwomen would push their advantage to as many as 21, but a late second-half surge from the Blue cut the final score to 64-52. Wellesley closed with a 16-7 run thanks to five and four point efforts from Courtney Richter (Sinking Spring, Pa.) and Laura Barrett (Dobbs Ferry, N.Y.) respectively.

Malec led all scorers with 21 points, contributing a 5-for-6 night from three-point range. First-year Kari Geisler (Deerfield, N.H.) tallied 15 points and grabbed nine rebounds, while classmate Alice Mullen (Saunderstown, R.I.) chipped in seven points.

Sophomores Richter and Jessica Duff (Milton, Abingdon, UK) led the Blue as each grabbed a double-double. Richter netted 16 points and pulled down 10 rebounds, while Duff scored 14 and nabbed 14 rebounds. First-year Barrett (Dobbs Ferry, N.Y.) added six points in the loss.

Wellesley will return to action on Friday when the Blue travel to Haverford to participate in the three-day Seven Sisters Tournament, tipping off at 3 p.m. against Vassar in their first game of the weekend. RIC is back at home on Thursday as the Anchorwomen take on Roger Williams at 7 p.m.
