Wellesley Tops Brandeis, 61-57
WELLESLEY, MA - Junior point guard Kate Lyren posted her first double-double of the season, scoring 14 points and pulling down 10 rebounds, as the Wellesley College basketball team defeated Brandeis, 61-57, in a non-conference game Tuesday night.
Lyren was one of four Wellesley players in double figures as fellow junior Christine Carbonello scored a game-high 16 points and senior Jane Gooding added 14. Junior Kelly Grover chipped in with 11.
Wellesley led 34-30 at the break but found itself down by a point 47-46 late in the second half. Lyren and Gooding then made back-to-back treys to give Wellesley a 52-47 lead it would not relinquish.
Sophomore Jayne Wise paced Brandeis (1-2) with 16 points, matching Carbonello's game-high total. Freshman Lisa Pritzlaff scored 13, while senior Lindsey Sensenbrenner added 10.
Wellesley outrebounded Brandeis, 41-32. The difference in the game was free throws.Wellesley was 15-22 from the line, while Brandeis shot 6-for-9.
Wellesley (2-1) is off until next Friday when it travels to Swarthmore for the annual Seven Sisters Championship.
