Wellesley Leaps Above .500 Mark with 84-50 Triumph

WELLESLEY, MA - Junior Kelly Grover scored 18 points and grabbed nine rebounds as the Wellesley College basketball team improved to 5-4 with an 84-50 win over Connecticut College in a non-conference contest Tuesday night.

Fellow juniors Kate Lyren and Christine Carbonello added 15 and 12 points, respectively, as Wellesley posted a season-high point total.

Wellesley took control early and from long range, hitting five of seven 3-point field goals in the first half en route to a 44-23 lead at intermission. Carbonello was a perfect 2-for-2 from 3-point territory and also managed five steals at the defensive end of the floor. Lyren was 2-for-3 from beyond the arc, while senior Jane Gooding was 2-for-4. Gooding was the fourth Wellesley player in double figures, finishing with 12.

Sophomore guard Erin Shields, who scored a game-high 21 points and hit four of seven treys, led Connecticut College, which fell to 1-6. Freshman Mary Bushnell chipped in with 11 on 4-for-7 shooting.

Wellesley outrebounded Connecticut, 48-26, including a 21-5 edge on the offensive glass.

Wellesley travels to Medford, MA Thursday to take on Tufts at 7 p.m. in another non-conference contest.
