Wellesley's Hoops Season Comes To A 'Snows'

NORTHFIELD, VT - After enduring a lengthy bus ride through a Vermont snowstorm, the Wellesley College basketball team saw it season come to a close, 73-65, at the hands of host Norwich University Wednesday evening in the quarterfinals of the ECAC Division III New England Championship.

Wellesley got off the bus cold, as evidenced by the 42-15 deficit it faced after the first 20 minutes of play. The second half was slightly different, however, as Wellesley posted 50 points but still fell by eight.

Junior point guard Kate Lyren paced Wellesley offensively with a team-high 15 points to go along with four assists and four steals. Lyren was a one of four Wellesley players in double figures. Fellow junior Kelly Grover posted a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds, while senior Jane Gooding and junior Christine Carbonello scored 12 and 11, respectively. Carbonello's performance included a 3-for-4 night from beyond the 3-point arc.

First-year Bridget Harris came off the bench and was rather productive, scoring seven points and grabbing four rebounds in 25 minutes of action.

Shevon Gibbons led Norwich with 31 points, 22 of which came in that all-important first half. She also collected a game-high 12 rebounds.

Wellesley closes the season with a 16-9 mark, its fourth consecutive 16-or-more win campaign. The team bids farewell to seniors Gooding and Alessa Podolak. The Class of 2002 duo closes their career with a record of 75-26, three ECAC bids and the program's first NCAA Championship appearance in 2000.
