Wellesley Opens Season With Convincing Win

WELLESLEY, MA - Junior point guard Kate Lyren scored a game-high 19 points as the Wellesley College basketball team advanced to the championship game of the annual Wellesley Invitational with a 64-47 win over Wilkes University Saturday afternoon.

Bowdoin defeated Plattsburgh State, 55-24, in the second game. Wellesley (1-0) and Bowdoin will meet in the championship Sunday at 3 p.m. The consolation game begins at 1 p.m.

Lyren was 7-for-15 from the floor, grabbed five rebounds and also passed out a pair of assists. Junior Christine Carbonello and first-year Kristin Doeberl chipped in with 11 points each. Fellow first-years Erin Johnson and Amanda Davidson helped Wellesley to a 56-49 rebounding edge with seven boards apiece.

Lindsay Bey led Wilkes with 11 points.
