MIT and Wellesley Chase Down NEWMAC Cross Country Championships

Wellesley, Mass. –The Wellesley College women's cross country team and MIT's men's cross-country team each captured the 2002 NEWMAC Cross Country Championship, Saturday at Wellesley College.

With its 2002 championship MIT captured its fifth straight NEWMAC title dating back to the 1998 season, while the Wellesley College squad earned its fourth NEWMAC cross-country championship in five years.

MIT's Sean Nolan (Valencio, Fla.) was named the 2002 NEWMAC men's cross country Athlete of the Year with a first place finish with a time of 26:10 in the 8,000-meter race, while Eric Khatchadourin (Brookfield, Wisc.) of MIT was named the 2002 NEWMAC Rookie of the Year. Khatchadourin was the top-first year runner in the race with a time of 27:45 for a seventh place finish.

Springfield's Marissa Clapp (Winchendon, Mass.) earned her second consecutive NEWMAC women's cross-country Athlete of the Year honor, finishing first overall out of 126 runners with a time of 18:02.53. Wellesley's Christine Grant (Mercer Island, Wash.) was named the 2002 NEWMAC women's cross-country Rookie of the Year after finishing second overall and as the top first-year runner with a time of 18:38.88 in the 5,000 meter race.
