Arfsten Nets Two In Double-Overtime Win Against Wesleyan


Middletown, Conn. – Marret Arfsten (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) netted two goals and Caitlin Andrews (Edgecomb, Maine/Kents Hills) made 18 saves, including nine in overtime, to lead Wellesley to a 3-2 double-overtime victory against Wesleyan, Tuesday, in non-conference field hockey action. Wellesley won its fourth straight to improve to 8-2 overall.

With the score knotted up at two goals a piece, Wellesley's Arfsten knocked in her 42nd goal of her career, and her second game-winner in as many games, three minutes into the second overtime period.

Melissa Courtemache put Wesleyan on the scoreboard late in the first half netting an unassisted goal with just over two minutes remaining, before Wellesley battled back to take a 2-1 lead. Betsy Masiello (Solebury, Pa./Saratoga) connected passes to Arfsten and then to Ashley Bennet (Carlisle, Mass./Concorde-Carlisle) in the second half of play to record her team-high seventh and eighth assists of the season.

Wesleyan's Laura Pfeiffenberger then forced the game into overtime as she finished an Courtemache assists with 4:27 remaining in the game.

The two teams traded shots in the first half, but Wellesley's Andrews played big defensively for the Blue recording nine overtime saves en route to her fifth shutout of the season before Arfsten netted the game-winner.

Wellesley field hockey returns to NEWMAC action Saturday, October 8 at 1 p.m. at home against MIT.
