Wellesley Claims 2002 NEWMAC Field Hockey Championship Defeats Clark 4-0

Wellesley, Mass. -
Top-seeded Wellesley College used four goals from four players to claim the 2002 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference Field Hockey Championship with a 4-0 victory over second-seeded Clark University, 17-3, Sunday at Wellesley College.

With the win Wellesley, 16-3, earns an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Field Hockey Championships and claims its first NEWMAC Field Hockey Championship since 1998 and will make its first trip to the NCAA Championship since 1995.

Wellesley's one-two scoring duo Betsy Masiello (Solebury, Pa.) and Marret Arfsten (Moorestown, N.J.) combined for Wellesley's first goal of the game in the third minute of action. Masiello beat Clark keeper Jesse Egan (Pepperell, Mass.) to the far-post after a centering pass from Arfsten.

Clark had several scoring opportunities in the first half, including two point blank shots in the 24th minute and a solid corner attempt from Ashley Perez (Worcester, Mass.), but the Cougars could not beat Wellesley keeper Caitlin Andrews (Edgecomb, Maine). Andrews ended the game with eight saves.

Clark's best chance of the game came with just under two minutes remaining in the first half on a penalty corner. Clark's Jessica Petitt (Hatfield, Mass.) passed the ball to Perez who then slotted a ball into the middle of the circle to Jane Geary (Shoreham, N.Y.). Geary fired what would have been the equalizer, but Arfsten came up big with a defensive save.

Wellesley got on the board early in the second half to open up the game as Arfsten tallied an unassisted goal in the 38th minute. Ashley Benett (Carlisle, Mass.) followed with an unassisted tally 10 minutes later to give Wellesley a commanding 3-0 lead in the 49th minute. Wellesley's fourth and final goal came with 9:11 second remaining when Alissa Gordon knocked in a shot in the 60th minute on Arfsten's second assist of the game.
