For Immediate Release WOMEN’S FIELD HOCKEY –11.13.02 Contact: Christina Cracolici Phone: (781) 283-2003 E-mail: ccracoli@wellesley.edu Wellesley Edges Eastern University 1-0 To Advance To Second Round of NCAA Division III Field Hockey Tournament Wellesley, Mass. - Marret Arfsten (Moorestown, N.J.) rocketed in a goal off of a Rahkee Patel (Elyrio, Ohio) assist with 1:34 remaining in the first half to lead Wellesley, 17-3, past Eastern University of Pennsylvania , 16-5, 1-0 in the first round of the NCAA Division III Field Hockey Championships Wednesday at Wellesley. With the win Wellesley advances to the second round of the NCAA Division III Field Hockey Tournament and will play Skidmore, Saturday November 16th at 11 a.m. Wellesley had several scoring opportunities in the first half outshooting Eastern 8-2 while holding a 7-2 advantage in penalty corners, but could not beat Eastern goalkeeper Joelyn Moyer (Quakertown, Pa.) who had four saves in the first half and seven total for the game. Eastern's defense was also bolstered by two defensive saves, one in each half, from Amber Landis (Telford, Pa.). Wellesley finally found the back off the net when Patel connected with Arfsten for her second assist of the season following a free hit outside of the circle. Wellesley, which held a commanding 17-4 advantage in shots, was led defensively by Laura Bender (Mattapoisett, Mass.) and Betsy Masiello (Solebury, Pa.). "Laura and Betsy came through for us defensively today," said Wellesley Head Coach Sue Landau. "They both kept our defensive and midfield units poised and really stepped up their leadership on the field." Notes - Arfsten's goal was her 17th of the season and her 48th of her career, tying her for the Wellesley College career goals record with Alix Wandesforde-Smith '98.
