Richio Tallies a Goal and an Assist to Lead Clark Past Mt. Holyoke 2-0 in NEWMAC Field Hockey Semifinal


Wellesley, Mass. -
Kristina Richio (Portland, Maine) scored the game-winning goal and assisted on an insurance tally to lead second-seeded Clark (17-2) past third-seeded Mt. Holyoke (16-4), 2-0 in the semifinals of the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conferece Field Hockey playoffs, Saturday at Wellesley College.

With the win Clark advances to the championship game of the 2002 NEWMAC Field Hockey playoffs and will face top-seed and host Wellesley College, Sunday at 1 p.m.

Richio gave Clark the 1-0 advantage in the 37th minute with an unassisted goal beating the Mt. Holyoke keeper, Elizabeth Wishart (Virginia Beach, Va.) to the right side after a scramble in front of the goal. Richio insured the game finding Jessica Petitt (Hatfield, Mass.) in the 65th minute off of a penalty corner.

Mt. Holyoke had several chances in the second half to even the score, including two point blank shots in the eighth minute, only to be denied by Clark goalie Jesse Egan (Pepperell, Mass.) Mt. Holyoke out-cornered Clark in the game, 11-6, but could not capitalize.
