Wellesley, Mass. - Betsy Masiello (Solebury, Pa.) iced a penalty shot in with 4:25 remaining in the first overtime period to lift top-seeded Wellesley to a 2-1 overtime victory against fourth-seeded Babson, Saturday at Wellesley College in the semifinals of the 2002 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) semifinals. Wellesley will play the winner of the no. 2 Clark vs. no. 3 Mt. Holyoke game Sunday at 1 p.m.
Masiello took the penalty stop after the Babson goalkeeper Colleen Kelly (Limerick, Pa.) was called for the infraction. Kelly played brilliantly in goal for Babson, 14-8, and finished the game with 12 saves, including two diving stops as Wellesley outshot Babson 19-8.
Babson first-year Elise Conley (Shrewsbury, Mass.) pushed the game into the overtime period when she found the back of the net off of a pass from Abigail Boyd (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) as the time expired in the second half. Wellesley, 15-3, had taken a 1-0 lead late in the second half as Mira Patel (Wellesley, Mass.) scored on a textbook give and go with Julia Hunter (Amherst, Mass.) with 4:20 remaining. Patel carried the ball down the middle of the field beating two Babson defenders on the inside before passing the ball of to Hunter on the right wing. Hunter than slotted a pass across the front of the goal to Patel for a far-post shot. Wellesley 2, Babson 1 OT
