Wellesley Falls to Mount Holyoke in NEWMAC Quarterfinals

WELLESLEY, Mass. – The Wellesley College lacrosse team lost to Mount Holyoke College, 15-8, in the quarterfinals of the NEWMAC Tournament on Thursday afternoon. The Blue finish the season with an 8-9 record overall and a 3-3 record in NEWMAC regular season play. With the win, the Lyons improve to 8-9 and advance to play Wheaton College in the semifinals of the NEWMAC Tournament on Saturday at Springfield College.

After holding a 4-3 advantage 15 minutes into the first half, Mount Holyoke scored the next six goals of the game to take a 10-3 lead. In the run, co-captain Caitlin Taylor (Yarmouth, Maine) and first-year Marika Austin (Ashton, Md.) each netted a pair of tallies. Maxine Brownstein (Roseland, N.J.) broke the Lyon’s run when she scored on a free position with 16.5 seconds left before the break.

After trading a pair of tallies in the opening minutes of the second frame, Amber Evans (Worthington, Ohio) scored twice for the Blue to bring Wellesley within five of the Lyons. Evans’ goals would prove to be the Blue’s last as Mount Holyoke scored twice more in the game to give the Lyons a 15-8 win over Wellesley.

Senior co-captain Katie Moseley (Denver, Colo.), Brownstein, and Evans (Worthington, Ohio) each scored a pair of goals for the Blue. Catherine Schaefer (Coxsackie, N.Y.) and Abby Baird (Gloucester, Mass.) chipped in with a tally apiece. First-year goalie Kristin Jaronczyk ( Manhasset, N.Y.) made 15 saves for Wellesley.

Taylor led the Lyons attack with three goals and six assists, and Austin tallied three goals and dished out three assists in the game. Lisa Paul (Westfield, N.J.), Christina Donatiello (Old Bridge, N.J.), Lindsay Oldershaw (South Hadley, Mass.), and Danielle Babcock (Lexington, Mass.) all scored twice for Mount Holyoke. Senior netminder Lauren Mulcahy (Norfolk, Mass.) stopped ten shots for the Lyons.
