WELLESLEY SLIDES BY MIT 14-10

WELLESLEY, Mass. –  Dawn Kim (Greenwich, Conn.) scored four goals and passed off two assists to power Wellesley past MIT 14-10 in the first round of the 2004 New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference Women’s Lacrosse Championship. With the win fourth-seed Wellesley advances to the semifinals of the championship and will face-off against top-seed Wheaton College (12-2, 6-0 NEWMAC), Saturday, April 24 at 2:30 p.m.

Kim was one of four Wellesley players to score at least three goals as Laura Bender (Mattapoisett, Mass.), Maxine Brownstein (Roseland, N.J.) and Casey Logan (Scituate, Mass.) tallied three goals each for the Blue (4-8, 3-3).

Debbie Cheng (Valley Cottage, N.Y.) and Kelsey Presson (Needham, Mass.) paced fifth-seed MIT (3-8, 2-4) with three goals apiece.

Trailing 9-6 early in the second half, MIT rallied to knot the score up at nine goals apiece with just over 11 minutes remaining on the heels of a three-goal spurt from Presson, Deanna Lentz (Gaithersburg, Md.) and Stephanie Hsu (Winter Park, Fla.).

Wellesley rebounded, however, with a three-goal run of its own to take a 12-9 lead. Logan’s third goal of the game with 8:39 remaining gave the Blue its lead back at 10-9. Brownstein followed with her first of three goals in the final six minutes of action to give Wellesley a two-goal cushion with 5:22 remaining on an assist from Logan, before Kim closed out the three-goal run with her fourth goal of the game with 4:16 left.

MIT’s Elizabeth Lin (East Brunswick, N.J.) cut the Wellesley advantage to two at 12-10 with her lone score of the game with 3:06 on the clock, but Wellesley’s Brownstein would put the game out of reach for the Engineers firing off Wellesley’s final two goals in the last minute of action for her second and third goals of the game.
