WHEATON DEFEATS WELLESLEY 18-5 IN NEWMAC LACROSSE SEMIFINAL

NORTON, Mass. –  Julia Coit (South Portland, Maine) and Anna Lombard (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) scored five goals a piece to lead top-seed Wheaton College (13-2) past fourth-seed Wellesley (4-8) 18-5 in semifinal action of the 2004 New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference lacrosse playoffs. With its fifth consecutive win Wheaton advanced to the Championship game and will face Springfield College for the NEWMAC crown for the third straight year. Wellesley closes its season with a 4-8 mark overall and a 3-3 record in conference action.
 
Wheaton’s Lauren Maynes (Woodstock, Vermont) netted four goals for the Lyons while Kimberly Corbin (Branford, Conn.) and Vanessa Pisano (Vineyard Haven, Mass.) added two goals a piece.
 
Wellesley first-year Casey Logan (Scituate, Mass.) collected her second consecutive three-goal game to lead the Blue with three goals, while seniors Dawn Kim (Greenwich, Conn.) and Laura Bender (Mattapoisett, Mass.) rounded out the scoring for the Blue with a goal and an assist each.
 
Wellesley kept the score close in the early minutes of the game, trailing by just one goal at 3-2 nine minutes into the first half. Logan scored both of Wellesley’s early goals, while Wheaton spread its scoring between Maynes, Coit and Lombard.
 
Wheaton pulled away however when it scored six unanswered goal, taking a commanding 9-2 lead with 8:30 remaining in the half. Lombard and Coit sparked the Wheaton attack in the six goal run netting three goals a piece.
 
Wellesley scored first in the second half, as Bender tallied her lone goal of the game seconds into the second stanza to cut the Wheaton lead to 10-4 with 29 minutes remaining, but Wheaton would score the next eight goals straight to earn the win.
 
Wellesley first-year Maxine Brownstein (Roseland, N.J.) played well defensively for the Blue, holding Wheaton’s Pisano, the leading-scorer in the NEWMAC averaging nearly five goals per game, to just two goals. Brownstein ended the game with two ground balls, a caused turnover and a draw control.
