Smith Edges Haverford, 14-13
WELLESLEY, Mass. – In the opening game of the 2007 Seven Sisters Championship, Smith College came from behind in the closing seconds of the game to edge Haverford, 14-13. Smith advances to the semi-finals, playing the winner of the Wellesley-Bryn Mawr game at 4:00 this afternoon at Wellesley College. Haverford will play the loser of the Wellesley-Bryn Mawr game at 3:30 this afternoon at MacDowell Field at Babson College (directions)
Smith jumped to an early lead in this morning's game, taking a 3-0 lead by the 26:10 mark. Haverford responded with five unanswered goals over the next ten minutes, including two from Liz Koelmel (Hamburg, N.Y.), to take a 5-3. The teams traded goals for the remainder of the half, with Haverford holding a 7-5 lead at the break. Smith opened the second period with three consecutive goals, taking an 8-7 lead with 24:26 left on the clock. The two squads traded goals through the middle of the half, which set the score at 10-10 at the 14:51 mark. Haverford then went on a three-point run, netting their final goal with only 1:46 remaining to take a 13-10 lead. But Smith stormed back with three goals in the next minute to tie the score at 13-13 with :47 seconds on the clock. Sara Smyth scored the game-winner with only :14 seconds left.
Smith was led by Sara Smyth (Brooklyn, N.Y), with three goals and three assists. Emily Riff (Wayzata, Minn.) added five goals and one assist. Goalkeeper Sara Smith (Brooklyn, N.Y.) tallied 17 saves in the win. Haverford was led by Koelmel and Casey Sanborn (Lewiston, N.Y.), with four goals a piece. Koelmel added two assists. Goalie Siobhan Neitzel (St. James, N.Y.) had 7 saves.
