Wellesley Downs Bryn Mawr in First Round, 9-5

WELLESLEY, Mass. – Wellesley College advanced to a semi-final match-up against Smith College, with a first-round win over Bryn Mawr, 9-5. Wellesley plays Smith at 4:00 this afternoon at Wellesley College. Bryn Mawr will play Haverford at 3:30 today at MacDowell Field at Babson College (directions). The win lifts Wellesley to 4-1 on the season. Bryn Mawr drops to 1-4.

Wellesley dominated the opening half, out-shooting Bryn Mawr 20-6 and building a five-point lead with goals from five different players. Bryn Mawr got on the board with 7:49 remaining in the period, and scored again just before the break to narrow the lead to 5-2. Wellesley opened the second half with two quick goals from Maxine Brownstein (Roseland, N.J.) and Colette Whitaker (Great Falls, Va.) to stretch its lead to 7-2. The teams traded goals for the remainder of the game, but Wellesley maintained control and secured a 9-5 win.

Wellesley was led by Whitaker, with three goals, while Brownstein added two more and one assist. Casey Logan (Scituate, Mass.), Catherine Schaefer (Coxsackie, N.Y.), Haley Geller (Berkeley, Calif.), and Amber Evans (Worthington, Ohio) chipped in one goal a piece. Goalkeeper Kristin Jaronczyk (Manhasset, N.Y.) tallied 5 saves in the win. Bryn Mawr was led by Greta Flaherty (Cumberland, Maine) and Moriah Scott (Zionsville, Pa.), with two goals each. Avery Winn (Summit, N.J.) chipped on one goal. Goalie Stephanie Hilton (Westwood, Mass.) had 15 saves.
