Wellesley Cruises Past Mount Holyoke, 19-7

Wellesley, Mass.  – After a slow start that allowed Mount Holyoke College to take a 2-1 lead in the opening minutes of the game, Wellesley College scored six straight goals to take control and cruise to a 19-7 win. The Blue now stand at 6-3 overall and 1-0 in NEWMAC competition. Mount Holyoke falls to 2-4, 0-1 in the NEWMAC.

Caroline Schnell (Portland, Maine) and Danielle Babcock (Lexington, Mass.) led the Lyons to an early lead, with each netting a goal in the first five minutes. But the Bue defense held Mount Holyoke scoreless for the next 22 minutes, while Caitlin Meeker (Columbia, Md.) tied the score at 2-2 with a goal at the 15:14 mark, sparking a six-goal run that put the Blue ahead for good. Coming out of the break with an 8-3 lead, Wellesley kept the offensive and defensive pressure on, holding the Lyons to four goals in the second half while netting 11.

Mount Holyoke was led by Schnell, who tallied three goals. Babcock, Kristin Cody (Old Lyme, Conn.), Josephine Nieport (Ipswich, Mass.), and Megan Wefald (Grander, Ind.) chipped in one goal a piece. Lisa Roberts (Yarmouth, Maine) had 13 saves in the loss. Wellesley's offense included six players with multiple goals. Colette Whitaker (Great Falls, Va.) and Casey Logan (Scituate, Mass.) found the back of the net six times and five times, respectively. Meeker, Amber Evans (Worthington, Ohio), Haley Geller (Berkelely, Calif.), and Molly Morrow (Bow, N.H.) scored two goals each. Maxine Brownstein (Roseland, N.J.) chipped in one goal and two assists. Kristin Jaronczyk (Manhasset, N.Y.) tallied 13 saves and eight clears in the win.

Mount Holyoke returns to action on Tuesday, April 3, with a 7:00 p.m. game at Springfield College. The Blue take the field again on Tuesday as well, with a 6:00 p.m. game at M.I.T.
