Wellesley Tops Smith, 19-7

Wellesley, Mass. – Six different players from the Wellesley College lacrosse team scored to lead the Blue to a convincing 19-7 win over Smith College on Saturday afternoon.  Senior attacker Casey Logan (Scituate, Mass.) had a game high seven points, with four goals and three assists, to help the Blue (8-3) grab its third-straight conference win.
The loss settles the Pioneers at 3-5 overall and 0-2 in the NEWMAC.

Wellesley exploded for 12 goals in the opening half, thanks to four first-half tallies from first-year Haley Geller (Berkeley, Calif.) and a hat-trick from classmate Colette Whitaker (Great Falls, Va.).  The Blue managed to find the back of the net eight times before back-to-back goals from sophomore Emily Riff (Wayzata, Minn.) put the Pioneers on the scoreboard and cut Wellesley’s advantage to 8-2 with 9:31 remaining in the first frame.  Wellesley quickly answered back with a four-goal run, thanks to two of Geller’s four first-half goals, and one each from Whitaker and Amber Evans (Worthington, Ohio), to enter intermission with a 12-2 lead.

The Blue continued to maintain control in second-half, stretching its lead to 16-2, before Smith’s Sara Smyth (Brooklyn, N.Y.) tallied an unassisted goal at 17:19 to kick off the first of the Pioneers’ five second-half tallies.  Wellesley, however, outscored Smith, 7-5, in the second frame to pick up a comfortable 19-7 win over the Pioneers.

Behind Logan’s four goals and three assists, Geller finished with a game-high five scores.  Senior tri-captain Maxine Brownstein (Roseland, N.J.) contributed three goals and Whitaker added three tallies and one assist in the win. Sophomore netminder Kristin Jaronczyk (Manhasset, N.Y.) made seven saves between the pipes.

Smith was paced by three scores from Riff and a pair of goals from both Smyth and Rebecca Capute (Easton, Md.). Sara Smith (Brooklyn N.Y.) was peppered with shots, making 11 saves for the Pioneers.

Wellesley will return to action on Tuesday, April 10th when the Blue travel to Wheaton College for a 4:30 p.m. conference game, while Smith also returns to action on Tuesday in a conference game against Springfield College at 4:30 p.m.
