Elementary Golf Syllabus
12 Unit Course Outline

The following syllabus is weather dependent. It is not practical, for example, to teach putting indoors, so if it is raining on the day putting would normally be taught, the schedule will be rearranged. This outline will, however, give you a sense of the general course content.

1. Introduction

Organizational issues
Safety issues
5 or 7 iron
grip, address position, pivot, follow through
1/2 swing (no wrist cock)

2. Review Fundamentals (5 or 7 iron)

1/2 and 3/4 swing
introduce arm lift and wrist cock

3. Continue work on fundamentals (5 and 7 iron)

introduce alignment, intermediate target
emphasize sequence and firing right side
3/4 swing - full swing for those ready for it

4. Introduce difference in irons (5, 7 and 9 iron)

work on shoulder turn, timing and rhythm, full follow through
practice full swing with different irons

5. Approach shots (7, 8, 9 iron, wedge)

introduce and practice chip and pitch

6. Putting

7.Wood (3 or 5 wood) with and without tee

8.Variety of clubs

practice hitting 5 balls with each club

9. Stand still golf

10. Mass hole play (go over etiquette, rules, map)

11. Play

12. Play
