Calvin Chin
Calvin has spent 25 years as a private student of the Fu Hok Tai He Morn system
(comprising Shaolin Hung Gar Tiger Crane kung fu, Wu Chien-Chuan
tai chi, and Mu Dong Yat Hei Ngm Hahng Morn) under late founder,
Kwong Tit Fu. He has also trained for six years in Uechi-Ryu karate under George Mattson. Calvin tested
and received black belt promotion from Kanei
Uechi of Okinawa. Calvin is now a
Grandmaster, highest ranked, and is the appointed successor of the
Fu Hok Tai He Morn system. He participates in masters exhibitions and has published a number of
articles. In 2002 he was selected to the USAWKF Hall of Fame, and awarded Outstanding Master.
As the Tai Chi Sabre and Kung
Fu instructor at Wellesley, Calvin goes beyond the physical aspects of martial arts,
enabling students to gain the philosophical and physiological
advantages from a discipline. He stresses the theory that supports
the action, providing the insight essential to developing higher
level skill. He also emphasizes the benefits of natural strength over brute
force, and encourages self-cultivation and further development,
which helps foster a life-long commitment to a healthy lifestyle.
In addition to spreading awareness of the benefits of martial arts through
community-sponsored and public education programs, Calvin also promotes the traditional arts in cultural forums, interprets martial arts principles and concepts for publication, and judges in national and international tournaments.
Calvin is the Chief Instructor and founder of Calvin Chin's Martial Arts
Academy. He also enjoys carpentry and furniture building.
