When is Chandler Pool available?
There are swims in the morning, at lunch, and in the evening.

I can see the pool, but how do I get there?
Unless there is a swimming meet, the only way to get to the pool is from the locker rooms. For safety reasons the doors from the locker room to the pool corridors are locked except when there is Rec swimming going on. Spectators for swim meets may enter the balcony area on the second floor near the classroom.

How many lanes does Chandler Pool have?
The pool has eight 25-yard lanes with a seperate diving area that includes two one-meter and one-three meter boards.

Do you have kick boards and pull buoys available?
Yes, they are stored in a bin on the deck and are available for use during rec swims. Please return them to the bin when your swim is completed.

Are there Aqua-Jogger vests available for water walking and running?
Yes, the Keohane Sports Center has several vests available that may be checked out for use. Please ask for one at the front desk. There is no charge for the equipment.

Are there lifeguards on duty?
Yes, student lifeguards are on duty whenever the pool is open for Rec swims. For your safety, please do not enter the pool unless the lifeguard is on deck.

Do I need to bring my own towel?
No, towel service is provided. Pick up one towel at the front desk and sign it out. Return the towel to the laundry bin at the desk when you exit the locker room.

What is the temperature of the water?
The water temperature is approximately 81 degrees to be comfortable for all users.

How many laps in a mile?
33 laps, a lap is down and back.

May I practice snorkeling?
Snorkeling equipment and fins are not allowed in the pool, unless special arrangements have been made with the facility manager.

How do I take the swim test to use the sailboats and canoes at the Boat House?
You may take the swim test whenever there are two lifeguards on duty and fewer than 10 people swimming. The test consists of jumping into the water wearing a sweat suit (provided) and treading water for five minutes. After one minute, while continuing to tread, take off the sweat suit. Tread for the remainder of the five minutes and then swim two continuous widths of the pool. Demonstrate the ability to put on a life jacket while in the water. Upon successful completion of the test, the lifeguard will give you a card. Save this slip of paper to present to the Boat House staff or PE instructor before taking out a canoe or sailboat for the rest of that term. After you have passed the swim test, you will be placed on a master list, and you will stay on the list throughout your time at Wellesley College.

If I don't know how to swim, how can I learn?
The PE Program offers Elementary Swimming. Click here for the PE Schedule.

How do I get a job as a lifeguard?
Once certified, contact Martha Dietrick (x2023), the Keohane Sports Center Facility Manager for more information.

Do I need a bathing cap and goggles?
These items are not required. You may purchase them from the front desk if you'd like.

May I use the diving boards?
The three-meter diving board is only available to the diving team. The one-meter diving boards are not available during lap swims (morning and lunch). They may be used during the open swim times (evening and weekends). Please be sure the lifeguard on deck knows you are going to use one of the boards.

May I bring a guest to the pool?
Yes, but only in the evenings or on the weekends. The lap swim in the morning and at lunch are for members only. Pay the guest fee at the front desk before entering the locker rooms.

Are children allowed to use Chandler Pool?
Yes, if they are five or older. Children under five may only use the pool when they are taking swim lessons offered by the Swim Team. Children between the ages of five and fifteen must be directly supervised at all times. Children sixteen and older may use the pool unsupervise as long as the parent is in the facility.

How do I share a lane with another swimmer or two?
There are two options. If there are two people you may split the lane down the middle and each stay on your own side or you can circle swim. This means that you go down one side and up the other. Please talk to the other person to decide which option you are going to use. If when circle swimming you need to pass, please tap the foot of the person in front of you and then pass only at the end of the lane. If you are tapped, please allow the person to pass when you complete your length.

Do you have to take a shower before entering the pool?
Yes, a cleansing shower is required before entering the pool.

May I swim in the deep end?
Yes, as long as you are aware of others using the deep end for laps or water running.

What happens if there is an emergency in the pool?
The lifeguard will get your attention by blowing three loud, long bursts on her whistle. This means to evacuate the pool immediately then follow the lifeguards directions.
