Elizabethtown Wins 2003 Wellesley Soccer Invitational Championship

William Paterson Knocks Off Wellesley in Consolation Gam

WELLESLEY, MASS.
– Shannon Don (Haddonfield, N.J.) finished an assist from Kelly Drumel (Swedesboro, N.J.) in the 50th minute to lift Elizabethtown past Western Connecticut State, 1-0, in the championship game of the 2003 Wellesley Soccer Invitational.  Don collected the square pass from Drumel inside the box and took one touch to the right before knocking in the goal to the top left corner of the net.

Elizabethtown’s Becca Young (Macungie, Pa.) was named the 2003 Wellesley Invitational Most Valuable Player.

Amy Weid made eight saves for Elizabethtown now 4-0 on the season.  Western Connecticut keeper Kristen Bartholomew (Bethel, Conn.) played solidly in net for the Colonials turning back 10 shots.

In the consolation game, William Paterson’s Erin Finn (Kearny, N.J.) tallied two second half goals to outdistance Wellesley, 3-0.  William Paterson (1-1) took a 1-0 lead in the 35th minute on a goal from Kat McPhail (Sparta, N.J.).  The score remained the same until the Finn rattled off the Pioneers final two goals in the 87th and 88th minute.  Senior Amy Weiszun (Wayne, N.J.) had two assists for the Pioneers while Denise Spina (Spotswood, N.J.) assisted on the first of Finn’s goals.

Wellesley’s best scoring opportunity came early in the first half as sophomore Jennifer Marcello (North Kingstown, R.I.) used her speed to beat William Paterson’s defense on a through-ball. Marcello’s shot beat Pioneer keeper Meaghan Koppel (Spotswood, N.J.) but was just left of the goal.

Koppel finished the game with four saves, while Wellesley’s Elizabeth Senecal (Wellesley, Mass.) made six saves for the Blue.  Wellesley soccer, now 0-2, returns to action at the University of Southern Maine Saturday, September 13 at 12:30 p.m.
