Wheaton Posts Third Consecutive Undefeated Regular Season in the
NEWMAC by Defeating Wellesley, 4-0
NORTON, MA- The Wheaton College women's soccer
team posted its third consecutive undefeated regular season in the
New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tuesday
afternoon, as the Lyons improved to a perfect 9-0 in league play
with their 4-0 victory over visiting Wellesley College at Mirrione
Stadium.
Ranked fourth nationally and first in New England, Wheaton improves
to 18-1 on the season. Wellesley falls to 7-7-2 overall and
4-4-1 in the NEWMAC. Collecting its 37th straight conference
victory dating back to the fall of 2000, Wheaton will host next
Saturday's conference tournament first round game against the eighth-seeded
Bears of Coast Guard at 1:00 p.m. Wellesley finishes fourth
in the NEWMAC.
Senior forward Tracy Prihoda (Needham, MA/Needham) tallied the first
half's lone goal in the 22nd minute, when she knocked home her conference-best
19th goal of the season. Finding open space in the middle
of the goal box, Prihoda's first shot ricocheted off Wellesley goalkeeper
Elizabeth Senecal (Wellesley, MA/Wellesley), but Prihoda was in
place to finish the opportunity with a strike into the upper left
netting. Wheaton held an 18-5 shot advantage in the opening
half, but Senecal was solid with seven saves and kept the visiting
team within striking distance.
The game remained a one-goal margin until midway through the second
half, as junior Christy Schneider (Jonesboro, GA/Jonesboro) took
a cross from Prihoda and managed to one-time her shot just before
Senecal could make the save. Schneider struck again with 80:06
to play, as a ball deflected off senior Sheila Lacambra (Walnut
Creek, CA/Northgate) in a crowded goal box. Just over three
minutes later, junior Erin Duffy (E. Longmeadow/E. Longmeadow) added
an insurance goal to complete the scoring. Sophomore Teresa
LeBel (Middleton, MA/Northfield Mt. Hermon) was credited with the
assist.
The Lyons finished the contest with a 30-10 advantage in shots and
6-3 edge in corner kicks. Senior netminder Jessica Broomhead
(Barrington, RI/Barrington) had a monumental afternoon, as her 14th
shutout of the season gave her 39 career shutouts, breaking the
school's all-time record for shutouts in a career. Broomhead
posted one save in the victory, while Senecal recorded eight stops
for Wellesley.
