WELLESLEY EARNS 1-0 SHUTOUT OVER COAST GUARD
Wellesley, Mass. – Jen Marcello (North
Kingstown, R.I.) knocked in a rebound off of a shot from Connie
Spearnak (Fort Collins, Colo.) in the 77th minute to lift Wellesley
to a 1-0 win against Coast Guard in a New England Women’s
and Men’s Athletic Conference women’s soccer game Tuesday
at Wellesley.
With the win Wellesley improves to 4-4-2 overall and 1-1-1 in the
NEWMAC while Coast Guard drops to 5-4 and 1-2 in the conference.
Wellesley is now undefeated in its last three games.
Both teams played evenly registering 13 shots a piece with Coast
Guard holding a slight edge in corner kicks at 9-4. Wellesley
and Coast Guard were locked in a scoreless battle late into the
second half despite several good scoring opportunities on both sides.
Nine minutes into the first half, Marcello had her first scoring
opportunity on a break away but missed wide right of the net after
beating the keeper.
Carrie Foster (Blanchester, Ohio) had Coast Guard’s best chance
of the game in the 41st minute when she collected a deflected ball
alone in the box but Wellesley’s Elizabeth Senecal (Wellesley,
Mass.) smothered the shot for one of her nine saves in the shutout.
The shutout was Senecal’s third of the season and second in
the last three games. Coast Guard’s Joan Pavlish (Wichita,
Kansas) played solidly in net making seven saves.
