SECOND HALF SURGE PROPELS WELLESLEY PAST WPI 3-1

Wellesley, Mass. –  Trailing 1-0 for nearly the entire game, fourth-seed Wellesley exploded for three goals in less than five minutes to defeat fifth-seed WPI 3-1 in the quarterfinals of the 2003 NEWMAC women’s soccer playoffs, Saturday at Wellesley.

Junior Satya Twena (Newport Beach, Calif.) scored two goals less than three minutes apart in the 67th and 70th minute and senior Kelly Kehm (York, Pa.) capped off the scoring surge in the 71st minute to lead Wellesley (8-7-2) past WPI (9-8-1). With the win Wellesley advances to the semifinals of the NEWMAC tournament and will face top-seed Wheaton on the road, Saturday, November 8 at 1:30 p.m.

WPI led early in the contest as Aggie Ziolek (Londonderry, N.H.) rocketed in a shot in the fifth minute on a pass from Ashley Maiorano (Southampton, Mass.).  Ziolek’s shot deflected off of the hands of outstretched Wellesley goalkeeper Elizabeth Senecal (Wellesley, Mass.) for the tally.

The score stood at 1-0 in the favor of WPI for 65 minutes before Twena knotted the score at one all on an unassisted goal. Minutes later, Kehm found Twena for the game-winner in short order on a pass in front of the goal mouth in the 70th minute.  Twena one-timed the ball to the lower right corner past WPI keeper Manda Otterman (Hinsdale, Ill.) to give Wellesley the lead at 2-1.  Kehm scored a goal of her own 33 seconds later on an assist from first-year Elise Duryee-Browner (San Francisco, Calif.) for the 3-1 final.

Wellesley keeper Senecal kept the Blue in the game during the second half coming up with two huge saves, including a diving save on a break-away attempt from Ziolek to fend off WPI. Senecal finished the game with four saves while WPI’s Otterman made four saves.
