WELLESLEY SHUTS OUT U.MASS-DARTMOUTH 2-0

Wellesley, Mass. –   Wellesley’s Connie Spearnak (Fort Collins, Colo.) headed in an indirect kick from Jess Van Houten (Highland, N.Y.) in the 62nd minute to break open a scoreless tie to lead Wellesley to a 2-0 shutout victory against U.Mass-Dartmouth, Tuesday at Wellesley. With the win Wellesley halts a two-game skid and improves to 3-4-1 while U.Mass-Dartmouth falls to 2-6-1. 
 
Wellesley added an insurance goal in the 77th minute when Jen Marcello (North Kingstown, R.I.) headed in a cross from first-year Alison Carney (Healdsburg, Calif.). Marcello’s goal was her first this season and third of her career.
 
Both teams were held scoreless in the first half as each team’s keeper made solid saves. U.Mass-Dartmouth’s best scoring chance game midway through the first half on a corner that was redirected out of the air by Maura Armstrong (Worcester, Mass.), but Wellesley’s Ann-Marie Novak cleared the ball off of the line.
 
Elizabeth Senecal (Wellesley, Mass.) recorded her second shutout of the season and 31st shutout of her career making nine saves for the Blue. U.Mass-Dartmouth’s Amanda Taveres (Dartmouth, Mass.) made eight saves for the Corsairs.
