FORSBERG LEADS BABSON PAST WELLESLEY IN DOUBLE OVERTIME

BABSON PARK, MASS.– Cara Forsberg (Walpole, Mass.) scored the game-winning goal with 1:54 left in the second overtime to lead Babson College to a hard-fought 1-0 victory over visiting Wellesley College in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's soccer action on Tuesday afternoon. With the win, the Beavers improve to 8-3-2 overall and 3-0-2 in the conference, while Wellesley drops to 5-8-0 overall and 1-4-0 in league play.

Wellesley's three best scoring chances came in the opening five minutes of the game, as senior so-captain Anna Stanton (Hanover, Mass.) got past the Beavers' defense twice and fired a total of three shots from point-blank range. However, Babson junior goalie Marci McCormack (Wolcott, Conn.) made back-to-back saves before covering the ball on thefirst rush, and then blocked Stanton's third shot attempt on her second breakaway.

After getting outshot 6-2 in the first half, Babson would finally gain some offensive momentum in the second half, firing seven shots to Wellesley's four. However, senior goalkeeper Kristin Doeberl (West Redding, Conn.) was outstanding in net for the Blue, recording six of her 10 saves in the period.

Doeberl continued to shine in the first overtime, turning away all three of Babson's shot attempts, including a fantastic diving save on a clean look by senior co-captain Toni Pantuosco (Hampden, Mass.). However, the Beavers would finally clinch the win in the second overtime, as first-year back Meg Lynch (Holden, Mass.) fired her team's 12th corner kick into the goal mouth. A leaping Doeberl was able to get her hands on the ball, but a collision at the goal line knocked it loose. Babson first-year Anita Martignetti (Winchester, Mass.) then bodied the ball to Forsberg on the left side, who hammered a shot into the upper right corner to end the game at 108:06. It was the junior midfielder's third goal of the season, and her second straight game-winner.

McCormack and Doeberl were both tremendous in their respective nets. McCormack finished with seven saves, including two in overtime, to earn her sixth shutout of the season, while Doeberl stopped 10 shots in net for Wellesley.
