STANTON LEADS WELLESLEY PAST SPRINGFIELD 3-1

SPRINGFIELD, MASS.–  Anna Stanton (Hanover, N.H.) scored two goals, including the game-winner,  to lead Wellesley past Springfield 3-1 in a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference soccer game, Saturday in Springfield.

The win snaps a five-game slide for Wellesley, now 5-5 overall and 1-1 in the conference, while Springfield falls to 2-6-1 overall and 0-2 in the NEWMAC.

Stanton scored Wellesley’s first goal of the game in the final minute of the first half to give Wellesley a 1-0 lead heading into the break and then followed with her second goal of the game and fifth goal of the season in the 54th minute for the game-winner. Wellesley’s Satya Twena (Newport Beach, Calif.) carried the ball down the wing and then played the ball back to Stanton who was waiting at the top of the box for the score.

Springfield quickly cut the lead to 2-1 in the 56th minute when Courtney Goetz finished an assist from Cara Reilly, but Wellesley’s Twena headed in an insurance goal in the 76th minute off a pin-point cross from Alison Carney (Healdsburg, Calif.) for the 3-1 final.
