BRENNAN LEADS WHEATON PAST WELLESLEY 5-1

WELLESLEY, MASS.. –  Wheaton improved its conference winning streak to 43 games defeating Wellesley 5-1 in a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference women’s soccer game, Tuesday at Wellesley. With the win Wheaton remains undefeated at 12-0 and improves to 3-0 in the NEWMAC while Wellesley falls to 5-6 overall and 1-2 in conference action.

Wheaton’s Erin Brennan (Mesa, Ariz.) was involved in the Lyons first three goals and ended the game with one goal and two assists to lead the potent Wheaton offense. Brennan assisted on Wheaton’s first goal of the game in the 35th minute when her initial shot on goal was deflected to Beth Caromile (Warwick, R.I.) for the score. Brennan then followed with a goal of her own in the 38th minute to give Wheaton a 2-0 lead that would stand through the half,  when she collected a square ball from Lauren Konopka (Medford, N.J.) and hit a one-time shot to the right side of the goal for the eventual game-winner.

In the second half, Wheaton wasted little time scoring its third goal as Konopka tallied her seventh goal of the season just thirty seconds into the second stanza on Brennan’s second assist of the game for the 3-0 lead. Wheaton would take a 4-0 five minutes later when Erin Duffy (East Longmeadow, Mass.) was awarded a penalty kick after being brought down in the box in the 50th minute.

Wellesley’s Jen Marcello (North Kingstown, R.I.)  cut the deficit to 4-1 in the 56th minute when she collected a deflected ball and tallied her third goal of the season, but  Jordan Pouliot’s (Manchester, N.H.) in-swinger on a corner kick in the 77th minute would close the game and give Wheaton the 5-1 final.
