WELLESLEY, Mass. - After 91 minutes of scoreless play, Wellesley's Sara Safriet (Fayetteville, GA) knocked in the game winner off a free kick to advance top-seed Wellesley (12-4-2) past #8 Southern Maine (12-8) in the quarterfinal round of the ECAC Division III Soccer Championship this afternoon, at Wellesley. Wellesley will host #5 seed Amherst College, the 1-0 winner over #4 seed Springfield, in the Semi-Finals at Wellesley on Saturday, November 4th.
Despite a combined 33 shots taken by both teams in regulation play, Wellesley and Southern Maine remained scoreless after 90 minutes. Wellesley Goalkeeper Elizabeth Senecal (Wellesley, MA) stopped fifteen of Southern Maine's sixteen shots, including stopping a late second half breakaway with a great save to keep the score at 0-0. Southern Maine's Samantha Whitman (Saxtons River, VT) recorded 14 saves on Wellesley's 17 shots. One minute into overtime, a Huskie penalty led to the direct kick which Safriet squeezed through both the backfield and Whitman for the sudden victory overtime win. The victory was Wellesley's 13th shut-out win of the year.
Other quarterfinal action on Wednesday, November 1, 2000 included the following games: second-seeded Bates College (12-5) a 2-1 winner over Plymouth State (10-7-2, fifth-seeded Amherst College (10-5-1) with a 1-0 victory over fourth-seeded Springfield College (13-5-2), and still playing: third-seeded Keene State (13-6-3) against Williams College (10-6),.
The four quarterfinal round winners will play semifinal games on Saturday, November 4 with the championship game held Sunday, November 5. Times and site will be announced after the games Wednesday for this weekend's semifinal and final contests.
