Wellelsey Soccer Tops Coast Guard in First NEWMAC Contest

NEW LONDON, CONN.--Junior Jennifer Lau scored her team leading fourth goal of the season, the only goal of the game, in the first half leading Wellesley to a 1-0 win over Coast Guard in the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) season opener for both teams.

Lau drove a shot over Coast Guard goal keeper Torie Lusardi with 17:51 left in the first half and the Blue (4-2, 1-0) held on for the win.

Lusardi, who made her first start of the season in goal for the Bears, made five saves. Lusardi missed the final 12 games of last season and the first six games of this season recovering from a knee injury. She left the game after being struck in the face during the second half. Sophomore Trish Ohle made two saves in the final 25 minutes for Coast Guard (3-4, 0-1)

First-year Katie Martore made 10 saves and recorded her third shutout of the season for Wellesley. Each team had 15 shots.
