Wellesley Soccer Holds off MIT to Snag 2-1 Victory

WELLESLEY, Mass. – The Wellesley soccer team scored twice in the first half to pick up a 2-1 victory over New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) foe MIT on Tuesday afternoon. With the win, the Blue improve to 9-4 on the season and 5-2 in NEWMAC play, while the Engineers drop to 9-6 overall and 4-3 in NEWMAC action.

Taylor Harvey (Seattle, Wa.) helped get Wellesley’s offense going in the 20th minute when she took the ball down the left sideline and served a cross into the box where Jordan Akerley (Gilford, N.H.) buried her second goal of the season. Haley Geller (Berkely, Calif.) then added a bit of breathing room for the Blue ten minutes later. Geller lofted a 25-yard shot over the head of Engineer senior keeper, Kat Vater (Middletown, Wis.) to let Wellesley enjoy a 2-0 lead at the break.

MIT returned with tremendous pressure in the second frame. The Engineers put up seven unanswered shots before Wellesley had their own crack at the net , but first-year goalie, Katie Martore (Great Falls, Va.), played stellar between the pipes as she turned away each Engineer attempt. As MIT continued their offensive pressure, the Engineers finally got on the board in 89th minute. Junior Amy Ludlum (Mission Viejo, Calif.), who led MIT with six shots on goal, blasted a 20-yard direct kick into the lower left corner of the net, Ludlum's tally would prove to be MIT’s final shot of the match as Wellesley held on for a 2-1 victory.

Martore finished the game with 13 saves for the Blue, and Vater stopped eight shots for MIT in the loss.

Both teams will return to action on Saturday with contests against NEWMAC rivals. The Blue will host Springfield at 1 p.m., and MIT will return to their home field to face Smith at 2:30 p.m.
